Abducted CoBRA havildar rescued, two arrested

MANGALDAI, April 10: The mysterious abduction of a havildar of the Commando Battalion for Resolute Action (CoBRA)-an elite specialized unit of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) on his way to Tura in Meghalaya from Dalgaon in Darrang district, has created sensation. However, the Darrang Police in a prompt initiative successfully rescued him within six days from a village at Kamarkuchi in lbari district and arrested two abductors.

General duty havildar SB Mallappa, a resident of Coorg district in Kartaka, of the 210 CoBRA, at about 8 am on April 4 left for Tura in civil dress to join the CRPF unit there as per official order, but since his arrival at ISBT, Guwahati he was found missing. However, the officials of the CoBRA in Dalgaon did not inform it to the police here and launched investigation on their own. Filly finding no altertive, the officials of the CoBRA informed Dalgaon Police Station and the Superintendent of Police of Darrang only at 9 pm on April 8.

 The Dalgaon Police, making a missing entry, started investigation to trace the whereabouts of the missing havildar. Darrang Superintendent of Police Sreejith Thiraviam took special initiative and got the information that using the ATM card of the missing havildar, someone withdrew an amount of Rs. 120,000 in three withdrawals in certain areas of lbari district.

 Taking this clue, a team of Darrang Police, with the help and assistance of lbari Police, on the night of April 9 arrested two persons when they tried to withdraw money from an ATM using his card. Both the arrested duo confessed their involvement in the abduction of the havildar and led the police team to the recovery of the abducted havildar who was confined in a house in village Kamarkuchi in lbari district. The abducted havildar was recovered in a senseless state due to influence of drugs and alcohol and is yet to regain his sense till filing of this report.
