MANGALDAI, April 29: In a significant achievement, a joint team of police of Darrang and Morigaon districts few days back successfully arrested a 65-year old hardcore absconding notorious poacher at Hamu Sar –adjacent to Orang National Park (ONP). Officer in-charge of Shyampur Police Station, Sub Inspector Nipu Kalita led the police team in his arrest. The arrested poacher Akhtar Ali of Hamu Sar locality was actively involved in poaching of one-horned rhinos in ONP since quite a long time and a number of cases have also been registered against him in different police stations. Two months back, he managed to flee when the Darrang Police conducted a raid in his house. However, the police recovered one .303 rifle, several rounds of ammunitions and other objectionable materials used in poaching from his house and arrested his son. Akhtar Ali, in order to avoid the police, had settled in Kachuwa area in Nagaon district. But being a habitual poacher, he frequently visited his home at Hamu char with the evil design of poaching.
