ABSU condemns killings in Kokrajhar, threatens to launch indefinite strike

KOKRAJHAR, May 3: The Kokrajhar District Committee, ABSU on Monday strongly condemned the brutal murder of two persons, including a student, in different places of Kokrajhar district and warned that the union would be compelled to call an indefinite strike if the district administration failed to arrest the culprits involved in the killings within a short time.

The president of the Kokrajhar district committee of ABSU, Premjit rzary and general secretary Nion Mashahary said that a memorandum was submitted to the Deputy Commissioner, Kokrajhar demanding the immediate arrest, prosecution and punishment of all the culprits who were involved in the recent killings of innocent people on the suspicion of witchcraft practice and political conspiracy. They also demanded to provide compensation of Rs 10 lakh to each victim family.

The memorandum said that Achinta Basumatary alias Ola, a BA 4th semester student of UN Brahma College, Kajalgaon in Chirang district went missing from his house ( East Maligaon, Bishmuri) since April 22 and his body was recovered in the presence of magistrate and police officials on May 1 from a deep jungle near Badrampur village under Bishmuri police outpost. Earlier, Achinta’s mother Garjrai Basumatary was branded as a witch five years back after the death of her husband and she was forced to leave her house. Since then she has been living at her parents’ house at Sulmari in Gossaigaon subdivision.

On the other hand, a man med Bishnu Boro (42), UPP worker was also brutally killed by suspected miscreants on the ground of political conspiracy at Podmabil village under Serfanguri PS in Kokrajhar district on May 1. The Kokrajhar district committee of ABSU demanded arrest of the culprits within a short time, failing which the union would be compelled to call an indefinite Kokrajhar district bandh.

Further, the union demanded a high-level inquiry into the recent killings of innocent people in the me of witchcraft practice and political conspiracy, ex-gratia of Rs. 10 lakh to each victim family and appropriate legal action to punish the culprits involved in the killing of such innocent people. The union also said that the repeated killing of innocent persons in remote areas under Kokrajhar district had proved a condition of insecurity in the entire district. The union also demanded strengthening of the safety and security measure before and after the result of assembly poll.

The Kokrajhar district United People’s Party (UPP) also submitted memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner, Kokrajhar, demanding the arrest and severe punishment to the culprits involved in the killing of Achinta Basumatary of East Maligaon under Bishmuri police outpost and Bishnu Boro of Podmabil under Serfanguri police station. The memorandum, which was signed by the president of Kokrajhar district UPP Raimon Brahma and general secretary Buddadev Mashahary, was also signed by MCLA Jatirindra Brahma and president and secretary of Kokrajhar district youth wing of the UPP, demanding judicial inquiry into the killings, immediate arrest of all culprits and punishment, adequate compensation to bereaved families and strengthening of law-and-order situation in the district by massive patrolling in village areas.
