ABSU extends support to Gorkhaland movement

From our Correspondent
KOKRAJHAR, June 17: The All Bodo Students’ Union (ABSU) on Saturday extended its support towards the creation of separate Gorkhaland state in West Bengal and said that the union had been supporting the cause for the Gorkha people in the hill district and would continue to back the movement for Gorkhaland. At a press meet held at Bodofa House, the president of the ABSU, Promod Boro said the movements in demand for creating separate states were active in different parts of India just after the UPA government’s declaration for creating Telanga state in 2009. He said the Telanga state was created in 2014 but the Government of India maintained deliberate indifference and discrimition towards the other aspirants of separate state.
Boro said to establish their historical prerogative, to ensure their political and land right, to assert their distinct identity with language and culture and also to eradicate the regiol disparity of socio-economic development, the demand for creating  Bodoland, Gorkhaland, Vidarbh, Bundelkhand, Twipraland, Purbanchal and Harid Pradesh started some decades back and were still restive. He said their demands were historically and constitutiolly legitimate, correct and justified. But the Government of India was apathetic towards the movement and was unwilling to resolve the problem. The outburst of tension in Darjeeling area is nothing but an unwarranted outcome of the autocratic rule of the Bengal government as well as Government of India’s utter negligence towards the problem, he said. Boro said, “We condemn the unprovoked atrocious act on the part of the Bengal Police and their indiscrimite torture on the urmed civilians in the streets of Darjeeling. Recovery of the so-called lethal weapons from the office of the GJM as shown in the media footage is a planted move of the Bengal police.” He said the torching of the vehicles of the media house was a part of the conspiracy hatched by the Bengal Police to blame the GJM. The Bengal Police with their repressive mentality are working as burglars by barging into the office of the GJM, a registered political party, he added.
As the member of the tiol Federation for New States (NFNS), the ABSU extended its support and solidarity towards the Gorkha people’s movement for Gorkhaland, he said and at the same time urged the Gorkha Jamukti Morcha leadership to lead the movement through democratic, peaceful and non-violent means. The ABSU also appealed to both the agitating leadership and the Bengal administration to keep away from violence and to maintain peace in the area. He further urged the Government of India for immediate intervention in the matter and to concede the Gorkha people’s demand for Gorkhaland state for permanent peace in the region. The ABSU demanded immediate intervention of the Government of India in the matter of Gorkhaland Movement as it was a pre-poll commitment of the BJP. He also said the central committee of BJP should clear its official stand on the issue. The press meet was also attended by the president of the NDFB (P), B. Sungthagra and deputy chief convener of the People’s Joint Action Committee for Boroland Movement, Gorjan Mashahary.
