Action sought against illegal coal, timber trade in Dibrugarh districts

A Correspondent

Dibrugarh: A source of the Forest Department has revealed about an illegal coal and timber trade flourishing in the districts of Dibrugarh and Tinsukia under the patronage of an MLA from Upper Assam and a leader of Dibrugarh district BJP.

Around 70-80 trucks had been plying along the NH-37 for the past many years, illegally carrying forest resources to many places like Jorhat, Meghalaya and Guwahati via Dibrugarh, as reported. It has been alleged that the forest department officials, despite having the knowledge of the illicit trade, fail to take action against it. Several influential persons are also said to be involved in the trade. In response to these allegations, many organizations, including Assam Sangrami Oikyo Mancha, All Assam Muttack Yuva Chatra Sanmilan and Assam Jatiyatabadi Yuva Chatra Parishad, have reacted strongly. All have raised concerns about the depleting forest resources, besides demanding immediate government intervention in it.
