Addicted to TikTok? Tamil Nadu Government looks forward to ban the app

Guwahati: In the Assembly on Tuesday, Tamil Nadu Information Technology Minister M Manikandan said that the government will approach the Centre with a demand to ban one of the most popular and downloaded mobile apps on both Android and Apple devices of these days named TikTok. With a surging growth, generating hundreds of millions of monthly users worldwide, Tamil Nadu too seems to have a very high number of users of the app, creating a hate speech platform for many.

AIADMK leader and Nagapattinam MLA Thamimun Ansari claimed that the app is a cause of damage to the Indian Culture. He added that, when countries like Saudi Arabia and China have already made regulations to ban such apps, India too should take up steps to boycott the Tiktok app which are producing good-for-nothing videos displayed in a vulgar way. As per M Manikandan, just like the deadly game ‘the Blue whale challenge’ which killed many youths in the country was uprooted after the banned protest, the TikTok app is addictive and encourages pornography and as such needs to be tackled immediately to block a serious disaster in the Indian culture.

The app allows its users to create short, user-friendly videos which can be synchronized with an existing sound file be it a song, filmy dialogue, or a famous speech of some politician.

Recently, the Chennai police discovered a flesh trade racket that used edited pictures of women downloaded from the TikTok. Many users also use the app to ridicule or express sympathy for politicians and also play a huge role in making new film songs go viral. Dr. Tamilisai Soundararaja who highly supported the state’s movement said that the app is used only to make fun of people in the name of entertainment.

However, the Congress national spokesperson Khushbu has put down the movement saying that these apps are used for personal good and those who don’t like them can simply not watch the same. She further added that instead of banning such apps, certain rules can be framed to check on the content.
