Guwahati: Hima Das, the 18-year-old athlete from Assam who created history and brought great laurels to the Nation as well as her home state Assam after winning first-ever gold by an Indian in World Championship is now amid a social media storm.

Criticisms ran high on the social media platform Twitter after a tweet from the official Athletics Federation of India (AFI) Twitter account shocked people from all across the nation and that of Assam.

The AFI Tweet read, “Not so fluent in English but she gave her best there too,” which featured a video of the victorious athlete from Assam speaking after her historic win.

At a time when the 18-year-old achieved such a historic win by bagging gold in the women’s 400m race for the first time by an Indian at the IAAF World U-20 Championships at Tampere in Finland, such controversial tweet from the AFI was harshly criticized by netizens from all over the country.

Twitteratis slammed this action of the AFI as one tweet read, “She has landed in Tampere for displaying her talent in track and not in English. Shame on you for what you said.”

Echoing the same sentiments, another Tweet read, “She has not been featured by the IAAF for her English speaking skills, we have a lot of good English speakers in India but very few who can run like her,” said another.

Following the hot grilling and backlash over social media platforms, the AFI was quick to tweet a clarification over the entire row.

Meanwhile, in Assam, the AFI tweet did not go too well amongst the people as a huge uproar was visible on Twitter it is evident that the Assamese sentiments were sharply hurt with such an immature behavior of the AFI.

A tweet from Monalisa Goswami from Assam read, “Who cares about her English?!!! It’s just a language meant for easing communication. She speaks with her strides. And her speech is pure poetry. Period.”

Another tweet read, “A proud Assamese….She will be the golden girl of Indian athletics”

A humble yet confident Hima following her historic win stated that it was the greatest achievement of her life till now and further added that tears rolled down her eyes as India’s national anthem was being played just after she achieved this great feat.

“Bringing a medal for the country is the biggest achievement and that is why I am very happy. I am very proud to give this gift to the people of India,” Hima reportedly told the media.

Hima beamed with gratitude while she thanked her parents, coaches and above all the people of India for their relentless support and guidance.
