AGP Carries Out Torchlight Rally Across The State protesting the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill

GUWAHATI: The Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) launched its fresh stir against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 by carrying out a torchlight rally across the State on Friday evening. In Guwahati, several senior party leaders including its general secretary Birendra Prasad Baishya and Ramendra Narayan Kalita among others joined the stir.

Talking to media, Baishya said, “Today’s stir marks a new phase in our agitation against the Bill. Till our three colleagues were in the Sonowal Cabinet, we were agitating as part of the government. But from today, we are carrying on the stir against the Bill from outside the Cabinet as our colleagues have already resigned over the issue.”

He further stated: The Bill goes against the indigenous people. The AGP respects the sentiment of the Assamese people. We will carry on our agitation till the Bill is withdrawn.

The regional party’s torchlight rally was carried out in Mangaldoi, Nalbari, Bokakhat, Jorhat, Kaliabor, Dibrugarh, Tinsukia, Dhubri, and Nagaon besides other places.

Meanwhile, in the next phase of the party’s agitation, the AGP legislators will carry out a hunger strike in Guwahati on January 24.
