AGP’s memo to FM for more bank branches

Special Correspondent

SILCHAR, January 20: AGP, Cachar district unit, has in a memorandum addressed to the Fince Minister of India today has demanded opening of a few more branches of Punjab and Sind Bank across the district to facilitate the implementation of Ja Dhan Yoja launched by the Prime Minister, rendra Modi, in order to spread the banking awareness among the poor and backward class people. It has at the same time expressed its gratitude to the NDA Government for the novel and friendly people scheme.

It has been pointed out that the ignorant and in most cases illiterate people become victims of chit funds and surreptitious companies. The recent case of Sarada Group is a glaring example. These groups taking advantage of the thrift and saving mentality of the rural people in particular and even in urban areas have taken them for a ride and fleeced them of their hard earned savings.

Ja Dhan Yoja has come as a great blessings to people in general and the index of the account holders on this count speaks of its acceptability and also credibility. The memorandum stresses that considering the growing acceptance and popularity of the scheme, it has demanded opening of more branches of Punjab and Sind Bank in the district. It has been brought into focus that Punjab and Sind Bank began operating in 1976 with one branch only.

It is most unfortute that even after 38 years of its existence, only one branch of it is doing business. The ever growing population of the district, now around 35 lakh, demands establishment of more branches. A copy of this memorandum has also been sent to the Chairman and Maging Director of Punjab and Sind Bank, New Delhi, with the request to open at least 5 branches in both urban and rural areas.
