SIVASAGAR, Feb 7: Two dragon sculptures, dating back to the Ahom era, were recovered from a pond in Charaideo district on Tuesday. According to sources, two golden dragon-shaped sculptures were recovered from historic Petu Dhuwa Pukhuri near Charaideo Maidams by workers engaged in cleaning of the pond. The two dragon-shaped sculptures are still in fine shape, and are presently kept in Mothurapur Police Station.
The shape and size of the sculptures are clear indications that they belong to the Ahom era. But the exact period during which these sculptures were made would be known only after carbon dating,” said an ASI officials. The big one weighs 6 kg with a measurement of 2 feet 6 inch, while the small one weighs 4 kg and 2 feet 4 inch long. The recovery of the dragon-shaped sculptures has sent ripples of excitement among the locals who believe more such treasures can be unearthed as this area is a treasure trove of items dating back to the Ahom era. “If we preserve these historical objects, our future generations will get an opportunity to know about our past and importance of preserving these objects,” a local said. Charaideo Deputy Commissioner Vivekanda Phukan informed that the two sculptures would be preserved in the museum in Charaideo.
