Airports Authority of India observes No Tobacco Day on May 31

GUWAHATI: The ‘World No-Tobacco Day’ is observed on May 31 every year worldwide. This Day was observed at all the Airports of North East Region under the Airports Authority of India (AAI) on Friday.

The programme started with the pledge taking ceremony to promote Tobacco-free premises and oath to say no to tobacco in daily life. The oath was administered by the officiating Regional Executive Director at Regional HQ, Guwahati and by all the respective Airport Directors (APDs) at their Airports and stations.

In their message to the employees and stakeholders, the APDs highlighted the health and other related risks of consuming tobacco. APDs also held a sensitization session for advocating to reduce the use of tobacco personally and aware of their family members in the same.

As per a press release, the message on the harmful effects of tobacco was displayed through banners and posters at the terminal building of NER airports. The electronic display of the messages ‘premise/ building is tobacco-free’ and ‘you are entering tobacco-free zone’ were also played at all prominent points of the airports.

The Notice and messages were placed at arrival and departure points of the passenger’s movement areas at the terminal buildings. Displayed messages also included the prohibition of tobacco and penalty for use of same in this premises.

This year’s theme for ‘World No Tobacco Day is – Tobacco and lung health’. The motive is to keep ourselves distant from tobacco use. The pledge taking, awareness campaigning and related activities were carried out at the NER Airports where AAI employees along with other stakeholders’ like security agency CISF, associated Airlines were also present on the occasion. At Guwahati, Dimapur, Silchar, Jorhat, Agartala, Imphal Airports the employees widely participated in the event and seminar on World No-Tobacco Day and harmful effects of tobacco.

AAI is a Miniratna Category-I Public Sector Enterprise that manages a total of 129 Airports in the country which include International, Customs, Domestic Airports and Civil Enclaves at Defence Airfields. AAI also provides Air Traffic Management Services (ATMS) over entire Indian Air Space and adjoining oceanic areas with ground installations at all Airports and 25 other locations to ensure safety of Aircraft operations.
