DIGBOI, May 11: Alleging that Ranjan Kumar Das, the DFO Digboi Division, had nexus with the mafia and goons involved in illegal trade of timber and other forest resources, the Tinsukia district unit of Assam Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) staged peaceful demonstration on Wednesday in front of the office of DFO Digboi in Tinsukia district shouting various slogans.

The protesters also slammed State Forest Minister Etwa Munda for allegedly appointing ‘worthless’ officials, including the DFO concerned who has miserably failed in his administrative approach to reach the expectations of the people due to his indifferent attitude. Addressing media persons, Sanjib Ulup, the president in-charge of the district unit of AJYCP alleged that the Digboi forest division under the leadership of Ranjan Kumar Das was involved in fincial anomalies and nexus with the mafias illegally trading in timber, sand, gravel, stones and mud. Ulup further alleged that a fat commission is collected every month by one of Das’ trusted office assistants Krishkanta Gogoi. Demanding the immediate transfer of the DFO and Gogoi, Ulup alleged that ubated and illegal felling of trees for timber trading was being carried out across the reserve forest at various locations of the division, beside unlawful exploitation of minor minerals and poaching in the protected areas being on the rise due to alleged indifferent attitude of Das who is paid handsomely by the mafias.

Meanwhile, Simanta Das, the general secretary of the district unit of AJYCP, alleged that corruption, misrule, exploitation, ubated deforestation, illegal digging, in-house fincial anomalies, land encroachment for tea plantation, mushrooming of illegal stone crushers and collecting illegal money at the toll gate had become common in the green division of Digboi.

The protesters demanded immediate transfer of Ranjan Kumar Das in the interest of the green division and submitted a memorandum to Puru Gupta, the Deputy Commissioner of Tinsukia, in this regard.
