AJYWO to NHAI: Make tiol highway safer for pedestrians

FROM A CORRESPONDENT

SHILLONG, Jan 28: Concerned about the safety of pedestrians and commuters along the NH-6, the All Jaintia Youth Welfare Organisation (AJYWO) Central Body, has urged the NHAI and its implementing agency, the GR Infra Project Ltd and the two District Administrations of Jaintia Hills to install more speed-breakers and other road safety measures along all the life-risky zones of the NH-6, the highway being under construction at present.

“With the improvement on the present condition of the NH-6 in terms of smoothness and wideness compared to the NH-44, the vehicles are seen plying now at high speed due to the better condition of the highway now. But, this present condition of the highway also poses many dangerous threats to pedestrians and commuters as the highway passes through many road crossing points, sharp curves, deep gorges, deep valleys, residential areas and public places like schools, offices, churches, temples, banks, markets, etc. Therefore, even though, it is a highway, speed-breakers and more safety road measures like sigge, sigls, rumble strips and rumble strips are required along the stretches of NH-6 for the safety of all pedestrians and commuters,” said MH Dkhar President AJYWO Central Body in a press statement.

Dkhar also added, “As most of the stretches of NH-6 pass through rural residential and a few semi-town areas, where safety road-crossing  methods and safety footpaths are not yet available as compared to the other advanced states in India, so, for the safety of pedestrians especially students and young ones who cross the road daily, the AJYWO has urged the NHAI and its Implementing Agency, GR Infra Project Ltd along with the intervention of the two district administrations of the region to construct more speed-breakers and put in place other road safety measures in all the risky and sensitive locations that the highway passes through.”
