LAKHIMPUR: Not seeing any positive development from the part of the government, except notification, with regard to paying the revised wage to the tea garden workers from January, the activists of the Lakhimpur district unit of All Adivasi Students’ Association of Assam (AASAA) staged a three-hour long sit-in on Monday in front of the Lakhimpur DC office.

Initiating the protest, led by district president David Soymurum and secretary Basanta Karmakar, the organization demanded the government to cancel the interim wage of Rs. 30 and finalize the minimum wage of tea garden workers within the month of August. The organization also demanded that the minimum wage should not be finalized below Rs. 350 and to pay the revised increased wage to the tea garden workers from January, 2019. The organization further demanded to establish ME and High Schools in the tea garden areas immediately but not in Public-Private-Partnership model. The organization submitted a memorandum to Pallav Lochan Das, State Labour Minister, through the Lakhimpur DC in support of these demands.
