All Assam Chutia Students’ Union (AACSU) threatens to commit mass suicide

LAKHIMPUR: A section of activists of All Assam Chutia Students’ Union (AACSU) will commit mass suicide unless the Bogibeel Bridge is christened after Sati Sadhani. The Chutia Students’ Union declared this at a mega mass convention held at the Tyag Kshetra of North Lakhimpur town on Monday under the aegis of the Lakhimpur district unit of the student organization along with Chutia Jati Sanmilan, Chutia Jati Mahila Sanmilan and Chutia Jati Yuva Sanmilan. Participating in the event, AACSU general secretary Mohen Borah boldly stated that the organization would initiate strong agitation to attain Scheduled Tribe status for the community.

“The demand for christening the Bogibeel Bridge after Sati Sadhani by the Chutia community is 21 years old. The fulfilment of the demand is a question of prestige which the community has lost due to the negligence on the part of State and Union governments in the past days. Both the governments have betrayed the community regarding granting Scheduled Tribe status to the community,” he further added, demanding both the governments to keep their poll promises regarding ST status to the community.

Haren Chutia, the chief secretary of Sadou Asom Chutia Jati Sanmilani, demanded the State Government to honour the glorious heritage of the Chutia community. “The government has adopted various steps to empower the women of the State. Under such circumstance, the government must pay adequate dignity to Sati Sadhani who glorified the history of Assam with her supreme sacrifice for the sake of patriotism,” he reiterated.

In addition to them, AACSU president Khirod Saikia, chief adviser of Sadou Chutia Yuva Sanmilan, Nripen Saikia, Arup Kumar Baruah from Matak Students’ Union, and president of Deuri Students’ Union also delivered speeches in the convention.

Further, the activists and members of all the brother organizations of the Chutia community unitedly carried out a rally within the town from Tyag Kshetra and submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister through the Lakhimpur DC regarding their demands.
