All Assam Women Rifle Contingent to march in the Rajpath for the first time

Guwahati: The All Women Assam Rifles Contingent will be marching down the Rajpath for the first time in the history on the Republic Day parade on 26th January.

It is for the first time in the history of Assam Rifles and in the Paramilitary that the women contingent will be saluting the President at the Rajpath. The women contingent seems to be special because some of the women jawans are kin on martyred soldiers who have been recruited on compassionate ground and they feel pride that the dedication to serve the nation, satisfactory feelings in their duty and donning and honouring the uniform is all that they want.

Rifle woman Sunita Thapa has been recruited in place of her husband saying that she has followed her husband by joining the service only because she wants to fulfill her husband's dream. She further added that the entire family is proud of her and that she is proud of Assam Rifles.

Mother of a five year old son, Thapa said that her husband died in an accident when he was on leave and that she will fulfill his dreams as a soldier which is possible only because of the support that she owns from her family member.

Another Rifle Woman Gayatri Sharma also joined the force in place of her father who attained martyrdom in 2001. Sharma's father was also an Assam Rifle jawan and she lost her father when she was just three years old. She joined the Assam Rifle to perform her duty with full dedication and to serve the country just like her father.

The Contingent will be led by Major Khusboo Kanwar who feel proud of the women contingent who will be marching on the Rajpath for the first time in the history. The women contingent consist of 144 members and many of them have also been deployed in counter-insurgency in the Northeastern region.
