MANGALDAI: Taking an inspiration and encouragement from the 500-year old ‘Ema Keithel’ (Mothers’ Market) at Khwairamband Bazar in Imphal, the capital city of Manipur which is considered to be one of the oldest and Asia’s all women market, the City Mission Management Unit of Assam State Livelihood Mission at Mangaldai Municipality Board has taken up the novel initiative to set up an ‘All Women Weekly Market’ at Mangaldai town on a temporary basis. Aiming to provide an organized platform for promotion of the products prepared by different women Self-Help Groups (SHGs), the civic body, as per guidance of legislator Guru Jyoti Das, has made arrangements for this market to be held at LNB Road every Saturday.

Mangaldai legislator Gurujyoti Das, in presence of chairman of Mangaldai Municipal Board, Manik Sil Sharma, District Development Commissioner Sweety Gogoi Kalita, Executive Officer of the civic body, Hemashri Khanikar, vice-chairman Zinkul Ali and other leading citizens on Saturday morning inaugurated the all women market. In his inaugural speech, Guru Jyoti Das hoped that this unique kind of market, which is very rare in the State, would definitely attract the buyers from different corners of the district. The initiative would also help in transforming the dream of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal of women empowerment into reality. On the inaugural day on Saturday, participants from a total of 180 SHGs took part with tremendous enthusiasm.
