Guwahati, April 22: Resentment is brewing among some members of the Asom Xatra Mahasabha (AXM) following a controversy surrounding the election of the new president of the apex body of Xatras.

Xatradhikar of Ramraikuti Xatra of Dhubri Jitendra th Pradhani was elected as the president of the body in November last. He was declared the winner uncontested by outgoing president Lilakanta Mahanta as only one nomition was filed.

However, four months after he was elected, Pradhani is yet to be given charge of the organization.

Bhadrakrish Goswami, a former president of the Xatra apex body, said the Sivasagar district committee was to host the next biannual conference of the AXM. “The conference was slated for March-April this year. It was during the conference that the new president was to take charge. But the Sivasagar district committee expressed its ibility to hold the conference and sought postponement till October,” Goswami said.

However, general secretary Dimbeswar Goswami, without the approval of the executive committee, issued a notification deferring the conference indefinitely.

“Till when should the newly elected president wait to take over charge? Why is the outgoing committee not holding a special general meeting to hand over charge to the newly elected president?” Goswami questioned.

He alleged that the outgoing committee wanted to keep control of the affairs of the Mahasabha and as such indulging in such delaying tactics. There are also allegations that the general secretary has been violating the Mahasabhas constitution while discharging his duties.

The controversy has sparked resentment within the apex body of Xatras.
