AMEF c-in-c shot dead in Garo Hills

Shillong, May 2: The dreaded self styled commander –in-chief of the AMEF identified as Jack Marak  was shot dead at an encounter with Meghalaya Police on Saturday morning at Madadrop area of North Garo Hills district.  

Acting on a specific information, the SWAT team of East and North Garo Hills district carried out a joint operation at the temporary AMEF camp located in Maddrop forest. “There were round about 10 AMEF cadres who engaged in a gunbattle with the police team before Marak was gunned down,” informed the Superintendent of Police, North Garo Hills, Ramesh Kumar.

The rest of the cadres maged to escape and left behind one AK 47, a 9mm pistol, 49 live ammunitions and 16 detotors besides other explosives in the temporary shed in which they were camping. The slain self styled c-in-c was identified by some of the surrendered AMEF cadres, disclosed the SP. Jack Marak is also known as Chang Matgrik. He was the former fince secretary of the proscribed Garo tiol Liberation Army (GNLA) before floating the AMEF in 2014. He is one of the ten most wanted militants by Meghalaya police and had carried a reward of Rs 10 lakh on his head.

The killing of Jack Marak is the latest success of the police in counter insurgency operations in Garo Hills and it is also a body blow to the outfit that has been involved in a series of murders, extortions and other anti- state activities.
