MANGALDAI, March 18:  The distribution of laptops as part of the Ando Ram Barua Award to a total of 1,338 students who secured first division in the last HSLC, High Madrassa and Sanskrit tol fil examition from Darrang district began here on Wednesday.

The district administration of Darrang organized a ceremonial distribution function in the district library auditorium here. Minister for Fisheries, Water Resources Basanta Das, while attending the function as the chief guest, gave away the laptops and certificates to selected 14 students. Addressing the gathering, the Minister said that the State Government was committed to the development of education in the State which led the government to allocate more fund in the State budget. The function was also addressed by Additiol Deputy Commissioner, Dr Bijoya Choudhury, Circle Officer of Mangaldai Revenue Circle yanjyoti Pathak among others while Inspector of Schools Sadulla Khan, explained the purpose. Earlier all the guests lit the lamp before the portrait of Ando Ram Barua and paid tribute to him.

Meanwhile, a strong resentment has been expressed by a section of students and guardians for holding the ceremonial award function at a time when the Assam Higher Secondary Council is conducting the HS first year fil examition across the State since March 17, following which many award winning students had been deprived of attending the function.  The Darrang district unit of AJYCP has also strongly criticized the role of the Darrang district administration for deliberately neglecting the very purpose of the scheme.
