Another Temple Theft In Guwahati City

GUWAHATI: In the past five months, almost three thefts were reported in the Uzan Bazaar area under Latasil police station. Following the infamous Ugratara theft incident, another was reported in Borkholia Namghar in Uzan Bazaar recently, and now, a Hanuman Mandir is the latest loot incident.

The temple is adjacent to the CM residence and Governor’s house raising serious queries regarding the security in the area. However, Guwahati Commissioner of Police Deepak Kumar has assured that there is nothing lacking when it comes to the security of the area. “We have policemen on duty who continuously patrol the streets at night. In fact, the security is rather tight in the area but a thief has his ways and manages to get his job done somehow and we on our part also never leave any stone unturned to ensure that the looters are nabbed at the earliest”, he said.

President of the temple Joy Prakash Goenka informed that the thieves first crept in the room of the priest and stole the key to the main door, after which they ransacked the donation box, stole cash of Rs 25 lakh along with gold and silver valuables. Guwahati Commissioner of Police Deepak Kumar, Guwahati Joint Commissioner of Police Devraj Upadaya and Kamrup (M) DC Biswajeet Pegu also visited the spot. Although the thieves corrupted the CCTVs, Commissioner Kumar stated that some footage remains and as such, they are hopeful about catching the crooks at the earliest. Now, although it is true that the security provisions in the particular area are the tightest, three thefts were reported in only five months raising the question, if the VVIP areas remain unsafe, how protected is the city anymore?
