Anti-India Posts after Terror Attack At Pulwama Land 15 persons In Assam Police Net

GUWAHATI: The Assam Police have so far arrested 15 persons, including teenagers, on charges of putting anti-India or pro-Pakistan posts on social media after the recent terrorists attack at Pulwama in Jammu & Kashmir by the Pakistan-based Jaise-e-Mohammed that martyred 42 CRPF personnel.

Addressing a press conference at Janata Bhawan at Dispur on Friday evening senior Cabinet minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said these persons have been arrested under various provisions of the IPC, including charges of sedition, provocation with intent to cause riot, promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race and assertions prejudicial to national integration.

Sarma said the police have identified 19 persons, including Papori Banerjee, a professor of English at Icon Commerce College, Guwahati for making anti-India posts in the Facebook, Twitter and other social media platforms. The police have so far registered 16 cases across 13 districts and arrested 15 persons.

The arrested persons are Hafizur Rahman (19) & Ahezuddin (35) from Darrang district, Mohd. Khairul Alam Laskar (19), Mohd. Saikul Alam Laskar (18) and Mohd. Riajul Laskar (28) from Tinsukia, Shahanur Islam from Goalpara, Anwar Hussain from Chirang, Prince Ajmal Hussain (17) from Sonitpur, Rahul Hussain & Jintu Khan from Bongaigaon, Rahul Tanti (23) & Mansu Ali (29) from Lakhimpur, Ujjal Nath & Omar Faruque Abdullah from Morigaon and Mohd, Dilowar Hussain from Kamrup (R). Police are investigating certain anti-India posts since these were generated from fake Facebook or Twitter accounts.

According to Sarma, there are reasons to believe that the arrested persons might have connections with a vested interest group trying to destabilize the State on religious and communal lines. He said the Assam Police is keeping a close tab on social media and anyone found posting anti-India or pro-Pakistan comments will not be spared.
