'Anti-social activities thrive in Police Bazaar'

From A Reporter

SHILLONG, Oct 8: Even as police patrolling is present in Police Bazaar area (Khyndai Lad) during night hours, anti-social activities still continue to thrive in the area. This was alleged by Police Bazaar headman Shankar Lal Singhania while speaking to The Sentinel.

“Anti-social activities are there in spite of police patrolling, especially thieves, prostitution, etc,” he said.

According to him, the concerned authorities should come up with proper guidelines for the vendors and hawkers selling fast food etc, in Police Bazaar.

“The authorities concerned – be it the State government or the district administration – should come up with a guideline that will direct the hawkers and vendors to sell their goods till a certain time at night,” Singhania said.

“Some of these hawkers and vendors are keeping their shops open till well past 11 pm even though there are few customers on the road as most tourists go back to their hotels by 9 pm to rest after a hectic day of sightseeing,“ he said.

Recalling the past when Kelvin Cinema was still there, Singhania said during those days it was very safe to walk in Police Bazaar even after 10 pm. “However, now things have changed because of the different anti-social activities,” he alleged.

It may be reminded that recently a 36-year-old woman vendor identified as Anja Sinha was murdered in Police Bazaar around 1.30am. Sinha used to fritters and other fast food in the area.
