Silchar: Consumption of tobacco is the main reason behind people having cancer. Number of cases related to mouth cancer, breast cancer and lung cancer are quite high in the valley of Barak. The only option to fight against this evil is to shun tobacco consumption as its products contain high quantity of carcinogenic elements. This was pointed out by Dr Subhadra Goala, doctor of preventive cancer, working in Cachar Cancer Hospital and Research Centre, at the valedictory function of the weeklong special camp on ‘For tobacco-free youth’ which was held at a NSS adopted slum at Itkholaghat of this town on Sunday.

Dr Subhadra Goala interacted with the local students and guardians and explained in details about the harmful effects of consumption of tobacco, cigarette, alcohol and other related products. She also clarified the doubts and misconceptions regarding cancer and tobacco. The special camp conducted by the two units of National Service Scheme (NSS) of Gurucharan College, Silchar, began on November 19 which focused on the prevalence of tobacco use among teenagers. Senior journalist Prof Jyoti Lal Chowdhury who is also the president of the governing body of the College highly commended the efforts and initiatives of both the units of NSS.

“It is indeed a painstaking job to educate masses regarding tobacco and its harmful effects. It is even more challenging to work in a slum area. It is a daunting task to spread knowledge where the level of literacy is quite low,” he added to say.
