APCC asks Speaker to clarify on 'legalized ransom'

Staff Reporter

Guwahati, April 26: Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) expressed serious concerns on the news published in the media on Assam Legislative Assembly Speaker Hitendra Nath Goswami who also represents the Jorhat LAC.  As per media reports, while inaugurating the Tockloi bridge recently, the Speaker reportedly asked the business community of Jorhat to donate funds if they wanted development works to be undertaken in their respective areas.

As per a release issued by Gauravv Somani, spokesperson, Assam Pradesh Congress Committee,

the community,  comprising mostly of Hindi speaking businessmen, is purportedly angry with the Speaker’s directive. The APCC release stated that Goswami had allegedly told the business community of Jorhat that it had failed to fulfill its promise of making money available to make roads in their locality and hence may have to face the consequences. Goswami had also allegedly asked the business community to raise funds for the construction of schools, colleges and hospitals in the State.

Condemning the alleged statements by Goswami, the APCC has demanded a public clarification by the speaker on the entire matter.

The APCC release further states that the BJP-led  Government in the state has tactically targeted various linguistic minorities and certain communities, destroying the rich culture and unity among the people of the State, while creating unrest.
