APCC protests against Karnataka Governor

GUWAHATI, May 18: The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) has staged a sit-in demonstration at Dighalipukhuripar in Guwahati against, what it said, unconstitutional and politically motivated authoritarian role of Karnataka Governor.

Hundreds of Congress workers took part in the protest led by APCC president Ripun Bora. They submitted a memorandum to the President of India urging him to save parliamentary democracy in the country.

Bora said that the Karnataka Governor, while exercising constitutional power, invited BJPLP leader BS Yeddyurappa to form the government even as the party fell short of the absolute majority. The BJP has 104 legislators against 118 of the Congress-JD(S) combine. The Congress-JD(S) submitted a list of 118 legislators to the Governor who, however, invited Yeddyurappa to form the government by ignoring Constitutional power and provisions. The House has as many as 224 seats.
