Appointment Scam: AASU Calls For Judicial Probe

GUWAHATI: Slogans demanding a time-bound judicial inquiry into the anomalies in appointment in the Panchayat and Rural Development (P&RD) Department and the Directorate of Information and Public Relations (DIPR) rent all district headquarters in the State on Wednesday.

Organized by the AASU (All Assam Students’ Union), students in all districts shouted slogans against, what they said, anomalies, nepotism, corruption etc in the recent appointment in the two departments.

In a statement issued to the press on Wednesday, AASU president Dipanko Kumar Nath and general secretary Lurinjyoti Gogoi said that the process of selection for appointments of lakhs of unemployed in the State has to be strictly based on merit and transparency. However, in the appointment in P&RD and DIPR this year there have been massive irregularities and nepotism, they alleged. They said that the Chief Minister, who speaks of zero tolerance against corruption, does not have guts to order a judicial inquiry into the appointment scam. The appointment letters were issued before the CID publishes its investigation report on the P&RD scam. In the DIPR the results of written examinations were declared on the very day when the examinations were conducted and appointment letters issued the very next day.”This is 100 per cent doubtful,” Nath said.

The AASU leaders said that the students’ body would not tolerate any injustice on the life of lakhs of unemployed in the State. They said that their agitation against the injustice would continue.

In Guwahati, the All Kamrup (M) District Students’ Union protested against the appointment scam near Dighalipukhuri in Guwahati. Lurinjyoti Gogoi, who was present at the protest in Guwahati, said, “The State Government’s policy of zero tolerance to corruption is a mirage.”
