Ramallah, Jan 6: An Arab League meeting in Egyptian capital Cairo will next week discuss a Palestinian bid for a place on the UN Security Council (UNSC), a senior official said on Wednesday. Arab foreign ministers are likely to attend the meeting, Saeb Erekat, secretary general of Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO) said. The meeting will also tackle the latest developments in the Palestinian territories and the current violent tensions between the Israelis and the Palestinians, Erekat said. Erekat, who is currently in Cairo, on Tuesday met Arab League chief bil al-Arabi and Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry. The Arabs and Egypt supports the Palestinian bid to the UN Security Council, he added. Also, Palestinian Foreign Minister Reyad al-Malki is visiting France as part of ongoing efforts to lobby for the Palestinian bid to the UN for full recognition of a Palestinian state. The Palestinian moves come as a current wave of violence between the Palestinians and Israel has killed more than 120 Palestinians and 21 Israelis since it broke out in October last year. The violence started in East Jerusalem, triggered by increasing visits of far-right Israelis to the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound, a site holy to both Muslims and Jews, and then quickly spread throughout the West Bank, Israel, and the Gaza Strip.
