Shillong, June 2: Former Chief Executive Member (CEM) of the Khasi Autonomous District Council (KHADC) and HSPDP leader, Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit has dared the leaders of the newly installed Congress-led People Democratic Alliance (PDF) executive council of KHADC for a public debate on the modified Village administration Bill (VAB).

The VAB is awaiting the Governor’s assent after the PDF-led Executive Committee passed the modified legislation on Saturday. The State government has endorsed the bill.

Basaiawmoit says the modified bill is “contradictory to the objectives of empowering the headman and village council”.

“I am ready for a public debate in any of the constituencies held by the honorable leaders of the ruling front,” he said.

His challenge came a day after the newly appointed Chief Executive Member of the KHADC Pynshngain N Syiem accused him of misleading the public on the incorporated clauses pertaining to the legislation.

“The HSPDP and its regiol partners have not misled the people on the VAB. We have not misled the people during the special session and as a former CEM and leader of the HSPDP, I am ready for a public debate in any place on the issue of empowering the traditiol headmen and village councils,” he stated, alleging that the newly elected CEM was playing politics with the issue. Basaiawmoit further felt that under the present PDF leadership, no amendment in the bill is possible.
