GUWAHATI, July 22: Arman Ali, a disability rights activist and executive director of Shishu Sarothi, an NGO working for empowerment of disabled people, has been appointed as the executive director of the National Centre for Promotion of Employment for Disabled People (NCPEDP). He would assume charge from October 1. The NCPEDP is a cross-disability, non-profit organization, working as an interface between the government, industry, international agencies and the voluntary sector towards empowerment of persons with disabilities.

Ali’s appointment was announced during a National Disability Consultation on the Rights with Disability in New Delhi on Friday. Ali is the executive director of Shishu Sarothi and has played a key role in bringing the disability sector together in the North-east. Ali took the lead to form a network of organisations from the seven states, leading campaigns and engaging the judiciary to uphold the rights of persons with disabilities. Ali, a wheelchair-user, was verbally abused by two men at a multiplex in Guwahati last year in February because he did not stand up for the national anthem.
