Arunachal Pradesh: Abnormal Tides in Siang River Worries Villagers

Itanagar: Strange and abnormal high tides in Siang river has raised fear psychosis among people in several villages under Mebo sub-division of East Siang district in Arunachal Pradesh while Namsing village in the area is reeling under serious drought like situation due to low rainfall. Hundreds of hectares of agricultural land, forest areas, human habitations have been inundated by flood water of Siang since past several days.

Mebo MLA Lombo Tayeng today rushed to his constituency to assess the ground situation and support the local administration to create awareness among the people to ensure their safety and security in case of any eventuality. “The mighty river has been flowing normally upstream without affecting banks and such unusual never seen before behavior has been spreading fear psychosis among the masses,” Tayeng, who is also the advisor to Chief Minister Pema Khandu told reporters last night.

Sensing the gravity of the situation, Tayeng had taken up the issue with the Chief Minister urging him to deal with the situation on and emergency basis. Khandu, however, directed the disaster management secretary to depute a team to monitor the tides for better understanding and examine the possible causes of the of unusual phenomena of the river.

Referring to the flood and draught like situation in his area, Tayeng said, “Siang River bed springing such extremely strange and unnatural tides had never been experienced by the local people before”. He suspected changing weather pattern might be pushing water current backward from below causing such anomalous high tides.
