ASEAN Study Centre opened at NEHU

SHILLONG, Aug 8: The ASEAN Study Centre located at the ICSSR-NERC, NEHU Campus, Shillong was today iugurated by Secretary (East) Ministry of Exterl Affairs, Preeti Saran.

Union Minister of State for Exterl Affairs Gen (Retd) V K Singh was supposed to iugurate the Study Centre but due to some pressing engagement he had to cancel his trip to Shillong at the eleventh hour.

The iuguration of the ASEAN Study Centre at NEHU is a culmition of the announcement of Prime Minister, rendra Modi to open such a centre at during the ASEAN-India Summit in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on November 21, last year.

Interestingly, the ASEAN Study Centre was iugurated on the 49th foundation day of the grouping.  

Speaking at the iugural function, Saran said that since the Northeast falls in the middle of India and ASEAN countries the region was at the core of India-ASEAN relations.

He said that the Act East Policy pursued by the present government is wider in scope geographically.

The Association of Southeast Asian tions (ASEAN) was established in Bangkok with the signing of the ASEAN Declaration by Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand. Brunei Darussalam, Vietm, Lao PDR, Myanmar and Cambodia joined later, making up the present 10 member states of the grouping.

Earlier, Meghalaya Chief Secretary, Kuljit Singh Kropha said that it was in the tiol interest to have an open policy with the neighboring countries.

Kropha said that the partition has disrupted the economy of the Northeast and it was better to quickly revive the link of the region with the South East Asian countries.
