GUWAHATI: Where on one hand the issue of Citizenship Amendment Bill has been a matter of discussion for a long time, the Asomia Ghaisutir Sasetan Nagrik (AGSN) stands for the distressed people of Assam. With the gracious presence of eminent personalities including Niropama Borgohain, Arupa Patangia Kalita, Tushaprabha Kalita, Diwas Phukan and social activist Harkumar Guswami a press meet was organized at the Guwahati Press Club on Wednesday.

While AGSN sharing their thoughts with the press they told that they are not totally against the NRC but they are against the politics of Bangladeshi. Renowned Author Arupa Patangia Kalita said, “A proper procedure of NRC should be completed, but it should not create any problems for the innocent people”. Patangia said that no one has the right to identify someone as foreigners just on the basis of their title. “It is shameful, where people representing a society and tribe like Adil Hussein, Sabilal Upadhaya and families of Anuara Taimur and Fakaruddin Ali Ahmed etc. are put under a question mark regarding their identity. If innocent people get afflicted then we will always stand for those people who are deprived from their right to living happily”, Said Patangia in her speech. Diwas Phukan while delivering his speech also said that NRC should be done but without compromising the harmony of people living in Assam and the process of NRC must not be a politics to conquer the power.

A Statement containing three demands and signed by more than 200 conscious citizens was also released as a part of the programme. The demands asks firstly for a closure to inhuman process like detention camp secondly, the conspiracy of identifying the indigenous people as foreigners and thirdly, the government should make sure to add the name of Every Indian citizen in NRS without creating any problems for them.
