Assam beaten by Punjab in Santosh Trophy

GUWAHATI: Assam lost to Punjab in their opening game of Santosh trophy soccer championship in Ludhiana today. Host won the tie 2-0.

Assam produced good contest against eight-time winner Punjab, who enjoyed physical advantage, and almost avoided to concede goal in the first half. But in the injury time Punjab took the lead capitalizing a suicide goal. The incident happened when captain Subhakshan Rava was trying to clear the ball and it went into the goal deflecting his body.

Punjab scored the second goal at the fag end of the match through Rajbir Singh.

Assam coach Subir Dey talking to The Sentinel over telephone said that although physical advantage was with Punjab but Assam contested very well in the game and even managed to create a couple of chance but failed to convert those narrowly. He also added: “If my team maintained same performance in the other three games it is not impossible to move into the next phase of the competition.”

In the next game Assam will face Maharashtra.

Meanwhile in other match of the day Maharashtra hold Karnataka 2-2 draw.
