Assam Chah Mazdoor Sangha (ACMS) demands release of arrear wages, hike in daily wages

TANGLA: The tea garden labourers of 24 tea gardens under the jurisdiction of Assam Chah Mazdoor Sangha (ACMS) Mangaldai Branch staged two-hour protest in front of their respective factories and Manager Bungalows in demand of release of arrear wages, implementation of new wage agreement and hike in daily wages of tea garden labourers on Monday. The tea estates where the protest programmes were carried out included Attarekhat, Dharamjuli, Swala, Borengajuli, Bhergaon, Krishna-Susaibini, Ambica, Dimakuchi Panery, Bamunjali, Orangajuli, Nonaipara, Bhutiachang, Hatigarh, Majuli, Ghagra, Khoirabari, Corammore, Chandana, Singrimari and Tangni.

Addressing the mediapersons, Rajya Sabha MP-cum-secretary of ACMS Mangaldai branch, Santiuse Kujur said, “The last wage agreement signed between Assam Chah Mazdoor Sangha (ACMS) and the Consultative Committee of Plantation Associations (CCPA), Assam Valley branch, expired on December 31, 2017 and even after 11 months of period the new wage agreement has not been signed. The government has formed a committee but it has not taken any decision.”

Kujur lambasted the dubious role of incumbent State Labour Minister Pallab Lochan Das who was allegedly ignoring the apathy of tea garden labourers and on the contrary was acting as an agent of the tea garden management. Kujur further alleged that the saffron party which was voted to power on its pre-poll promise of hiking the daily wages to Rs.350, had betrayed the Adivasi community by failing to keep up to their words and the BJP would never resolve the issues plaguing the tea garden labourers. The parliamentarian, raising the tempo of the forthcoming panchayat polls and 2019 parliamentary election, said that the Adivasi community would give the saffron party a befitting reply in the polls.

The tea garden labourers taking part in the protest programme expressed strong resentment toward the government’s lackadaisical attitude towards the issues. Kujur exhorted the government to release the arrear wages, implement the new wage agreement and to increase the daily wages of the labours to Rs.351 at the earliest and threatened to stir up protest programmes if the government failed to fulfil the demands.

The protest programme was also attended by president and organizing secretary of ACMS Mangaldai Branch, Paban Nayak. The tea garden ACMS units also submitted memoranda to their respective garden managers listing the three-point charter of demands.
