Assam Government Forwards Rs 82 Crore Project Report To MHA

GUWAHATI: The Assam Government has forwarded to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) the detailed project report (DPR) to create a central database on foreigners in Assam. According to sources, the approximate cost of the IT-based database as estimated in the DPR is around Rs 82 crore. This database, once completed would be accessible to the government agencies whenever required.

It is worth mentioning that this would be for the first time that this move has been made to create a central database on foreigners in Assam. Till date, there is no central database on the ‘Declared Foreigners’, ‘D Voters’ and the people against whom cases are pending in the Foreigners Tribunals.

The DPR has been prepared by the Assam Police (Border) as per instruction of Dispur following directive of the Gauhati High Court. The Court had issued the directive following publication of the draft National Register of Citizens (NRC). It had then come to the notice of the court that names of many ‘Declared Foreigners’, as mentioned by the respective Foreigners Tribunals, were also included in the draft NRC.
