Guwahati: Following the recent heinous lynching incident in Biswanath District that surfaced on Thursday, eleven people have been arrested by Police so far in connection with the case after a man who was mercilessly beaten up died after succumbing to his injuries.

The three other people who were also thought to be cattle thieves were critically injured by an angry and irate mob.

According to the Police, all eleven suspects who have been arrested are from the Adivasi community who work in the Diplunga Tea Estate which is around 250 kilometers away from Guwahati.

The fiasco began when on Thursday a mob consisting to the local villagers and tea estate workers stopped a pick-up van and suspecting them to be cattle thieves, they were brutally beaten up in the name of mob justice.

When the argument started heating up, the agitated mob started beating up its occupants who have been identified as Deben Rajbongshi, Phoolchand Sahu, Bijoy Nayak and Pujen Rajbongshi.

Following the inhuman beatings and a cruel treatment in the name of mob justice, Deben Rajbongshi succumbed to his injuries and died within a few hours, while the three other victims were admitted to a nearby hospital.

While one of the villagers had filed an FIR while accusing the five men of stealing his cows, the Biswanath Police too have also registered a case of mob lynching against these eleven people.

It may be mentioned that this horrendous incident comes to light at a time where the entire nation was shocked after the brutal killing of two Assamese youth in Karbi Anglong districts when the local villagers mistook them as child-lifters. The rumours over social media had further fueled the rage of the villagers and both were killed on the spot. Following rising cases of mob lynching in many states of the country, the Supreme Court was compelled to ask both the central and state governments to take very strong actions against anyone involved in such kind of crime.
