MANGALDAI: Four activists of the Assam Movement in Mangaldai on Thursday made an appeal to the AASU, AJYCP, KMSS and other organizations to form a common platform so that all the organizations of the State opposing the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 could be united to launch a strong movement in a well-planned manner. They also appealed to all the organizations to consider taking the path of mass agitation without affecting the academic atmosphere in the State.

Former AASU activist Hiren Kumar Saharia of Kalaigaon, who was detained under NSA for a period of one year during the Assam Movement, while addressing a press meet at Swahid Bhavan on Thursday afternoon, strongly supported the ongoing movement to oppose the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill and also condemned the anti-Assam role of the BJP.

“The need of the hour is to unite all the protesting organizations under a single platform and the AASU should take the lead role in it. During the six-year long Assam Agitation to demand deportation of illegal foreigners, the students’ community had to lose their academic years. So the leaders of the anti-CAB movement should take every care to protect the academic years of the students,” said Hiren Kumar Saharia while condemning the role of the BJP. He also laid stress on the need of taking up short-term and long-term policy to continue the movement with the involvement all sections of the society, irrespective of caste, religion and language, to form a common platform like the All Assam Gana Sangram Parishad during the Assam Movement.

Significantly, he also appealed to the leaders of the AASU and other agitating organizations to adopt an economic policy so that a work culture with productivity could be initiated. “The youth of the State should be encouraged to take up multi-cropping agriculture instead of single cropping system with organic cultivation only to strengthen the economy of the State,” he added.

Octogenarian activist of the Assam Movement, Rameswar Sarma appealed to create mass movement to protect the interest of the State and its people. Former activists of the Assam Movement, Lankeswar Baishya, Naba Kumar Deka and Bhargab Kumar Das of Mangaldai also took part in the press meet. They also strongly condemned the recent move of the State Government to arrest Dr. Hiren Gohain for so-called anti-national activities and warned the government to open its ears to hear the voice of the people of the State.
