Assam NRC Impact: Protesters against the NRC Draft List Block Rail Tracks

On Wednesday, the rail tracks at various stations in Eastern Railway’s Sealdah section were blocked by the All India Matua Mahasangha. The protest was against the Assam government’s NRC final draft list. The organization claims that the NRC draft will leave many people homeless.

The movement of trains in Sealdah-Hasnabad, Sealdah-Naihati lines were hampered after protesters blocked the rail tracks. Eastern Railway spokesperson, RN Mahapatra said that they are requesting and trying to convince the protesters to lift the blockades.

Out of the 3.29 crores of applicants, the final draft of the NRC verified approximately 2.89 crores of people. The main aim of the draft is to separate genuine Indian citizens from illegal migrants who might be living in the state. The terms of the exercise state that anyone, who could not prove that they or their ancestors, had entered the state before 24th March 1971, would be declared a foreigner.
