Assam NRC: Names of Two Assam Legislators Not on NRC Final Draft

Guwahati: The NRC Final Draft was published today in Guwahati, on Monday. The exercise of NRC had begun in 2015 and a partial draft had been published on December 31, 2017. The final draft of the NRC has been published today amidst widespread anxiety and tight security arrangements across the state and the capital city Guwahati.

The Draft published today excludes 40,07,707 people out of 3.29 crores applicants, including people declared “foreigners” by the Foreigner Tribunals and their family members who have been referred to the tribunals by the Border Police, people whose cases are pending with the Foreigners’ Tribunals and the D-Voters may be excluded from the final NRC Draft.

Interestingly two MLAs of Assam also did not find their names in the NRC Final Draft. One of the MLAs is Ramakanta Deori of Marigaon who is from the ruling BJP government. The other MLA is Ananta Kumar Malo.

Ramakanta Deori was further quoted by local media to be stating that he will not appeal for including his name as he is a son of the soil". The names of the MLA's family members too did not appear in the final draft.

Such a statement by Deori is sure to invite criticism from the opposition as the citizens of the state had been vouching for a transparent and unbiased draft.
