Assam Panchayat Polls: Poll campaign gains momentum in Biswanath district

Biswanath Chariali: Campaign for the panchayat Polls is going on in full swing in Biswanath district, including Gohpur subdivision, with the opening of temporary campaign offices by the candidates.

Four constituencies, namely Sootea, Biswanath, Behali and Gohpur Legislative Assembly Constituencies, come under this district and polls will be held in altogether 789 polling stations in the district. A strong contest is likely between the candidates of Indian National Congress and Bharatiya Janata Party. Both the parties have intensified their campaign to woo the voters with promises and assurances. A good number of campaigners, including APCC president Ripun Borah and Kamal Kumar Medhi, have visited the district and addressed public meetings. Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal is also likely to visit Gohpur on December 1. Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) has also intensified its campaign in the rural areas of the district and the opposition to the Citizenship (Amendment Bill) is their main issue.

In the district, tea garden voters can play a decisive role in electing candidates since there are around 1,30,000 voters in 31 small and big tea gardens. Minority and Nepali voters also play a big role in the election. However, everyone will have to wait till December 12 to see who wins the game.

Meanwhile, the Biswanath district administration is working on a war footing to ensure smooth conduct of the polls. A good number of employees have been trained up in this respect. Security has also been tightened in the entire district.
