Assam Police Trio & 60 Gold Bars!

GUWAHATI: An FIR lodged recently in Dispur Police Station by a person from Manipur has created a ripple of excitement in circles concerned in the Assam police force and those in the administration.

On January 15 this year, a few people suspected to be a gang of smugglers were going to Shillong. A three-member team of Guwahati Police was on the trail of the ‘gang’ from Jorabat. The police caught the ‘gang’ at Nongpoh only to set them free in the midway while taking them to Guwahati. The three policemen opted not to inform any police station of setting the ‘smugglers’ free.

Barring the three police personnel, the matter was not known to anybody else in the department. It was a closed chapter. However, the incident came to light when a person from Manipur lodged a complaint (363/19 under section 392 IPC) at Dispur Police Station. The FIR says that three police personnel snatched as many as 60 pieces of gold bars from the ‘gang’ while taking them back to Guwahati from Nongpoh, and set them free.

According to police sources, the name of an SI of Dispur Police Station has also figured in the case. The three police personnel have been absconding.
