Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC)releases panchayat poll manifesto

GUWAHATI: The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) has released its panchayat poll manifesto on Tuesday at Rajiv Bhawan here in the presence of APCC president Ripun Bora, former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, former Ministers Rockibul Hussain, Pradyut Bordoloi, Bhumidhar Barman and other senior party leaders.

Talking to the reporters alongside the releasing ceremony of the manifesto, APCC President Ripun Bora said that during the BJP regime, as many as 133 various welfare schemes devoted for rural development has been scrapped. “If Congress wins the ensuing panchayat polls, we will fight for reinforcement of these shrouded welfare schemes,” Bora said.

APCC president Bora stressed that both the AGP and BJP do not want to decentralize power to the grass root. “During its regime, the AGP did not conduct panchayat polls in the State. This time too, the alliance government of the AGP and BJP did not want to conduct the panchayat polls. It was the Gauhati High Court order which forced them to conduct the rural polls.” he said. Bora also revealed that the State’s BJP government has not released remunerations supposed to be disbursed to the elected panchayat members.

While releasing the manifesto, Bora alleged that Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has been threatening some Congress candidates who have filed nominations under Jalukbari constituency to withdraw their nominations.

Attending the function, State’s former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi said that law and order situation has been deteriorating in the State. “Over the last 15 years, when the Congress was in power, the underground outfits came forward to the mainstream. Contrary, number of youths have left mainstream to join the ultras during the BJP regime,” he said. He stressed that by introducing the Citizenship (Amendment), the BJP government is trying to dispose of Jati-Mati-Bheti instead of safeguarding it. “It is ridiculous enough that certain villagers under the Chief Minister’s own constituency have decided to boycott the ensuing rural polls alleging of lack of development in the villages,” Gogoi added. Meanwhile, former BJP MLA Abhijit Hazarika has joint the Congress on Tuesday.
