Assam Public Works wants centres for ‘corrupt’ in line with centres for ‘addicts’

GUWAHATI: The Assam Public Works (APW) has appealed to the State Government to set up centres for making ‘corrupt officials give up corruption’ in line with rehabilitation centres for making ‘addicts’ give up drugs’.

Addressing the media at Gauri Sadan here on Saturday, APW president Abhijit Sarma said: “Corruption is more lethal than cancer. A corrupt person can’t give up corruption the way an addict can’t give up drugs. There’re rehabilitation centres for making addicts give up drugs. We appeal to the State government to toe the same line, and set up centres for making corrupt officials give up corruption.”

Sarma said: “We’re going to lodge a complaint with the CID on the corruption in the Guwahati Irrigation Subdivision.” Assam Public Works general secretary Dhrubajyoti Talukdar said: “A tender was floated on May 27 this year for 15 works, and the tenders are to be opened on June 10. However, five of the 15 works have already been completed. How come such a thing happens?

We submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister on June 7 urging him to cancel the bidding process. We’ve demanded the Chief Minister to get the matter inquired into with the Vigilance and Anti-corruption Cell. Following two of our earlier memorandums to the Chief Minister against the corrupt practices in the Guwahati Irrigation Subdivision, the Principal Secretary of the Department has ordered a departmental inquiry into the allegations.”
