FROM OUR SPECIAL CORRESPONENT

IMPHAL April 8: The United NGOs Mission, Manipur has condemned the reported provokative statement of the 8 Assam Rifles commanding officer at Noney while making some arrests. The NGOs said that it is a violation of the intertiol convention on elimition of all forms of discrimition against women. "He made the objectioble statement as he was AFSPA wired," they said. The organization is taking strong exception to the way innocent civilians were subjected to degraded treatment and harassment at Noney on April 6. "Harassment and ill treatment of anyone after arrest is a war crime," they said. While the court is yet to decide whether the arrested person is a cadre of the Zeliangrong United Front, it is crime for the Assam Rifles to arrest an innocent person without proper reason and investigation, they said. Except for the alleged cadre, all others were set free later. It further says that the personnel of 24 Assam Rifles deployed at Khudengthabi near the intertiol border have been harassing passengers. Even ministers and their entourages are subjected to detentions. Community leaders were also subjected to such harassments by personnel of other Assam Rifles camps.
