LAKHIMPUR: AASU (All Assam Students’ Union) adviser-in-chief Samujjal Bhattacharjya has warned that Assam will burn if the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 is passed in Parliament.

Speaking at the Shilpi Divas centrally observed by the students’ body at Lakhimpur on Thursday, Bhattacharjya said: “The BJP governments have hatched a conspiracy to destroy the colourful culture of Assam, the Assamese language and the existence of the indigenous people of the State by passing the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016. The State will burn if the Bill is passed. The people of the State should come forward united against the Bill.”

Bhattacharjya further said that the AASU has appealed to all political parties and their MLAs to stand against the Bill. “We warn the Union Government not to pass the Bill in the Rajya Sabha,” Bhattacharya said, and added: “We’ve contacted MPs of Opposition and NDA alliance parties to oppose the Bill in the Rajya Sabha on January 31.”

Speaking at the open session chaired by AASU president Dipanka Kumar Nath, AASU secretary Lurinjyoti Gogoi talked of zero tolerance against the Bill. “The Union Government is imposing the Colonial rule on the people of Assam by adapting its fascist mentality. If the BJP governments impose the Bill on Assam, the result will be violent,” he said. He said that the Assamese could not proceed without following the ideology of Jyoti Prashad Agarwala.

Jayashri Chaliha, the daughter of Jyoti Prashad Agarwala, was felicitated at the event. Acclaimed dramatist Sewabrat Baruah inaugurated the open session that was participated by several academicians and intellectuals.
