From our Correspondent

Bongaigaon, March 18: “The All Santal Students’ Union (ASSU) will adopt an anti-Congress role in the coming BTAD election,” said ASSU president  Kain Kumar Hembrom at a press meet in Bongaigaon on Wednesday.

He said that ASSU had taken this step for the ictive role played by the Congress government in the State on the issues pertaining to proper relief and rehabilitation of the victims and affected families of December 23 carge in BTAD and Sonitpur district of Assam last year.

“The Assam Government has not taken any proper step for these victims and hence thousands of families are still homeless after the carge. We have informed and submitted memorandum to the Assam Government several times in this regard but no response has come from the government.  Hence we are compelled to take this step,” he said.

He also said that ASSU had demanded ST categorization of Santhals of Assam, introduction of Santali language in primary level from Class I to Class V as a medium of instruction in Santal domited areas, creation of posts and appointing adequate number of Santal teachers for Santal language in different LP, ME and High schools and for creation of reserved seats for higher education in medical and engineering for Santal students.  Hembrom warned that if their demands were not fulfilled immediately, they would launch a massive democratic agitation in the coming days against the government.
