ATASU stages protest, reiterates demand for ST status

From a Correspondent
Joysagar, July 1:  The All Tai Ahom Students’ Union (ATASU) central committee, with the help of  Sivasagar district committee, staged a protest at Dolmukh Chariali of Sivasagar town on Saturday in support of their demand to give ST status to the six ethnic communities of Assam, including the Tai Ahoms.
The ATASU leaders criticized the rendra Modi government as well as the Sarbanda Sonowal government as the leaders had promised to the voters of the six communities of Assam before the Lok Sabha and the Assam Assembly elections that if they would form the government, then would solve the issue and there would be no further need for any agitation.
However, the ATASU leaders lamented that no progress had been made in conferring ST status to the six communities and the people of these communities continued to remain deprived. ATASU activists also burnt the effigy of Prime Minister rendra Modi, Union Home Minister Rajth Singh and Chief Minister Sarbanda Sonowal in the busy Dolmukh Chariali. Besides, the leaders of ATASU also extended full support to the 24-hour Assam bandh called by the co-ordition committee of the six ethnic communities of Assam on July 3.
