ATDC chairman unveils statues of Netai Dhubuni and Behula-Lakhinder

DHUBRI, March 17: Chairman of the Assam Tourism Development Corporation Ltd (ATDC), Jayanta Malla Barua unveiled the statues of Netai Dhubuni, Behula-Lakhinder and Dhanjay, built at the cost of Rs 11 lakh, and installed in the Netai Dhubuni Park here on Friday.
Speaking in the meeting organized at the park premises, Barua said that mythology was preserved with the installing of statues of Netai Dhubuni and Behula-Lakhindar as there was belief in the minds of people of this part that the me ‘Dhubri’ was derived from Netai Dhubuni (a washerwoman) who used to wash the clothes of gods and goddesses of heaven.
“Similarly, efforts are being taken to protect and preserve the historical monuments and other important heritage buildings of Dhubri district. Moreover, a proposal was sent to the Central Government to declare  a Lower Assam Spiritual Tourist Circuit centring around Dhubri Gurudwara Sri Guru Teg Bahadur Sahib Ji and Surya Pahar of Goalpara,” Barua added.
Addressing the meeting, Dhubri Deputy Commissioner Ant Lal Gyani said that the people of this area might be happy to see the statues of the legendary figures mentioned the puras (old scriptures).
“Our priority is the development of Dhubri district, and for this we need your active support and co-operation to make it happen,” Gyani added.
In his brief speech, vice-president of Dhubri district BJP, Dr. Debamoy Sanyal thanked the ATDC for the works and hoped that installation of statues linked with the me ‘Dhubri’ was the beginning of a long-drawn development programme in the district.
Vice-president of Assam Fincial Corporation, Anil Kumar Das, chairperson of Dhubri Municipal Board, Pushpa Mallo and Dhubri Superintendent of Police, Longnit Terang also attended and spoke on the occasion.
Earlier, a delegation of leading citizens of Dhubri town led by Dr. Debamoy Sanyal met ATDC chairman Jayanta Malla Barua at Dhubri Circuit House and discussed various development issues related to tourism.
They also placed the demand for reconstruction of over half-a-century old Asom Sangha Hall, now in a dilapidated condition, with all amenities and provisions. Moreover, the delegation sought his support to complete the Dhubri Sports Complex (Dhubri Stadium) which remained incomplete for years due to paucity of fund.
