Attack on tribul member : Prime accused held

Goalpara, February 18: The Kharmuja police on Saturday apprehended advocate jrul Islam, the prime accused who allegedly assaulted Ajay Kumar Phukan, the member of Foreigners Tribul No.4 on Wednesday.

Later, he was arrested and brought to Goalpara for further investigation. Reportedly, he was not produced before the court till the filing of this report. On Wednesday, regarding a verdict on a D-voters case, a group of advocates approached the FT member and later one of them assaulted the member in his own office. Following the grave incident, Justice Ujjal Bhuyan, Gauhati High Court, Additiol Chief Secretary (Home) TY Das,  Director General of Police Mukesh Sahay and host of other top-level state government officers visited Goalpara to take stock of the situation. On the other hand, the three accused advocates jrul Islam, Omar Faruk and Shahjahan Ali were absconding after the assault incident. The matter created a row in the entire State and was condemned by the cross-section of the society.

On Friday, the All Assam Layers Association (AALA) arranged a press meet at Goalpara district court and condemned the incident. The AALA president and senior advocate, NI Choudhury demanded immediate arrest of the accused. Office bearers of both advocate associations of Goalpara district court were present in the meeting. On the same day, the Goalpara district committee of All Assam Students’ Union staged a sit-in before the office of the Deputy Commissioner gagging their mouth with black cloth, condemning the incident. The district chapter of All Assam Goria Moria Deshi Jatiya Parishad has also condemned the incident and demanded immediate arrest of the persons involved in the case. “The accused should be brought to book without much delay and be given an exemplary punishment. However, no innocent should be harassed,” remarked Faruk Ali, president, Goalpara district committee of All Assam Goria Moria Deshi Jatiya Parishad.
